February 12 Banksy Cafe Ho Chi Minh City

Not many associate the Vietnamese city, Saigon, with urban spots and a cafe culture that could take over one’s Instagram page. But once you step into these joints, you’d want to get those cameras and filters ready. Here are five of the most Instagram-worthy cafes this lively city has to offer.

La Rotonde

Situated along Ham Nghi Street, La Rotonde is a cafe that’s admired not only for its traditional Vietnamese fare, but also for its rustic, nostalgic decor. The first thing you’ll notice upon entering is how capacious the space is, thanks to its high ceilings. To complement the vintage-inspired architecture, photographs of bygone Saigon and Vietnam’s royal personages adorn the white brick walls. Be sure to grab a seat by the tall windows that flood the cafe with plenty of natural light and provide lovely views of the boulevard. It’s an ideal spot from which to savour a morning cuppa, whilst watching the city come to life.

Banksy Cafe

From the patterned floor tiles to the mismatched seat upholstery, this retro-eclectic cafe is bursting with style and endless photo ops. A cash-only outlet, the joint is inspired by the works of the infamous British political graffiti artist, Banksy, after which it’s named. Flip through one of the many books about Banksy they’ve shelved if you’re interested to know more about the artist.  While you’re there, take the time to explore the rest of the old apartment building that houses other hidden gems such as thrift stores and independent retail boutiques.

M2C Cafe

M2C is the creation of architect Tran Hoang Trung, the brains behind the design of a plethora of other cafes (Zest Bistro and The Fig Cafe, to name a few) in Saigon. Creating a cosy atmosphere, smooth cement-screed surfaces are paired with mood-lit exposed brick walls. Quirky accessories also lend the space a personalised touch, setting it apart from conventional, cookie-cutter cafes.

In one part of the diner, you’ll find a unicorn sculpture (one that probably receives the bulk of attention from patrons) and in another, a row of colourful crockery decorating the walls. Serving local fare, this outlet is best-known for its freshly ground coffee that comes from an organic farm in Buon Ma Thuot.

Thoai Vien Cafe

When in Saigon, you can’t go without visiting one of its garden cafes. Sometimes, you just have to take a breather, retreat to a sanctuary and surround yourself with the rejuvenating energy of nature. In this city, you don’t have to venture far to do this. In fact, you can almost always find a garden cafe wherever you are in Saigon. We recommend Thoai Vien Cafe. Abundant in cascading waterfalls and fresh greenery, it’s a place of tranquillity that’s both a treat for the eyes and the soul.

Get your mandatory “Outfit of the Day” shot at the storefront of Cucuta Coffee. Although it looks like you’re about to enter a florist shop, what lies inside serves more to satisfy your tummy. A great place for brunch-lovers, it offers burgers and baked goods, among other items.

Don’t forget to try the Vietnamese iced coffee, otherwise known as Ca Phe Sua Da, or the customer-favourite smoothies and Italian sodas. If you drop by on a Thursday or Sunday, you may even catch a live performance by a local band that plays folk, blues and country music.
